Sunday Snippets 04

I finally was able to escape the city this weekend for a much needed trip to the beach in Michigan with my family. It was hot, hot, hot, but I'm glad we got to take a trip up there this summer where we were able to do nothing except read and eat too much food. Below are some of my other favorite things from the week.

pumpkin noosa | No doubt a game changer. I recognize that we're nowhere near fall, but I stumbled upon this while grocery shopping last week and have to admit that I was hesitant to try it. I only ended up throwing it in my cart because my mom couldn't stop raving about it. I tried it the other day with pretty low expectations and I'm hooked. 11/10 for sure.

the devil wears prada turns ten | I loved reading some behind the scenes scoop about how this quotable classic came to be.

magnificent seven | I had chills from watching this clip about the female gymnasts in the 1996 Olympics. It's incredible how much drive and mental toughness they have to compete through all odds.

the night of | I am beyond hooked on this new HBO series. It's a mini-series that's currently only two episodes in...plenty of time to catch up before the new episode comes out tonight! Has anyone else been following along?

#nsale picks | Obviously the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is in full swing. I didn't go too crazy this year, but I was able to pick up thisthis, this, this, a new skincare tool that I'm super excited to try and FINALLY these, after refreshing the page no fewer than 50 times waiting for someone to return my size. I was really hoping for the nude color, but beggars can't be choosers and I'm just glad that they finally had my size in black. My order was cancelled twice for these shoes, but so far the third time is the charm (fingers crossed I didn't just jinx that!!). Things are going fast, but here are some of my favorite picks that are still in stock.

Club Monaco Must-Haves

Everything from Club Monaco lately is to die for. They have the cutest tops and dresses and I have to say that if there was one store that I had to choose from to stock my closet (other than J.Crew, of course) it would be Club Monaco - it has the perfect mix of both work and weekend clothes. Take a look at some of their summer frocks that I'm loving right now:

Sunday Snippets 03

the history of banana republic | I had no idea that Banana Republic got its start the way it did, and I always love learning about how brands evolve over time. This article explains how the store shifted its focus from being an outfitter for safari expeditions to a go-to for classic workplace staples. Plus, after reading this, the name finally makes a bit more sense to me.

are the 2000s making a comeback? | I sure hope not, but this funny article made me realize how close we are to repeating the horrible fashion trends from my middle school years.

how to save money | I'm always super conscious about how much money I'm saving and am constantly looking for new ways to put money aside. I picked up some really great practices and tips from this article.

qapital | Kind of a carry-over from the last item, but I discovered this app from the SELF article mentioned above...I LOVE IT! Qapital rounds up any debit card purchase that you make to the nearest dollar and instantly deposits the change into your savings. I try to be good about saving money from each paycheck, but with this method, you don't even notice that the money is missing from your account and all that small change can quickly add up.

the newsette | For all my Skimm lovers out there, this daily newsletter is set-up in a similar format, but focuses on fashion, beauty and pop culture.

why i didn't reply to your PR email | Not to toot my own horn, but as someone who has been on both sides of the PR/blogger relationship, I like to think that my pitches to bloggers tend to be well put together, but this article was still an interesting read for me and a good reminder of pitching do's and don'ts.

Recent Reads

I go back and forth through phases of being obsessed with reading and not having enough time to even pick up a book. Right now? I can't get enough and have at least 10 books that I'm interested in reading next.

At the beginning of the year I set a goal to read 30 new books by the end of 2016. I'm 1/10th of the way to my goal, with only three books crossed off so far, so it's time for me to pick up the pace. You can follow along with my quest on Goodreads, but I thought I'd leave my thoughts on a few of my recent reads below, along with what I'm hoping to dive into next.

Dark Places - After reading Gone Girl and Sharp Objects, I was intrigued by Gillian Flynn's first novel. True to her form, this book took several twists and turns and left me wondering up until the end how the crime took place and who the culprit was. It's certainly the darkest and goriest of her books.

Everybody Rise - After hearing so much about this book, I have to say that while I enjoyed it and it was an easy read, I probably wouldn't recommend it as one of my favorites. It was a little dull for me, and I felt as if I was continuously waiting for the plot to pick up steam. Overall it was a good book, and I'm glad that I read it, but it's probably not going to make my top 10 list anytime soon.

Crazy Rich Asians - Again, this was a book that I had heard a lot about and couldn't wait to get into. It was a bit on the longer end, but I enjoyed the satire that weaved throughout the story and it was a fun read overall. There is a sequel book, but I haven't gotten around to reading it quite yet.

What's next on my list? I've recently started You Are a Badass and am loving it so far, and of course I need to dive into Me Before You before it hits the theaters in June. What are you currently reading? Any recommendations?

Beauty Wishlist

Guys. I haven't blogged for a year. A YEAR! A whole entire 365ish days since I last clicked the "publish" button and shared my words with the world (or all 5 people who read this blog. Shout out to you guys!!) Incredible and kind of unbelievable, but I'm just going to get right into it.

Some people are shoe people, some people are purse people. I, however, am a beauty products person. When I have unlimited money to spend, you can bet that I will be purchasing shampoos, face masks, serums and moisturizers galore. I'm such a sucker for every new product that hits the market and at any given time I have a running list of about 30 products that I want to try. I can spend hours scanning the Sephora and Blue Mercury websites and combing through reviews to discover what I want to try next.

While I do have a pretty set routine that I follow day to day, I’m always looking to spruce it up with a new product from my list. Here are a few things I'm dying to try:

// 1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8 // 9 //

Let me know what your favorite beauty and skincare products are - I'm always looking to add more to my list!

Back At It

Happy 2015?

Okay, so it's no secret that I've been gone for a while—a while as in we are practically four months into the new year and I haven't even posted once. But in my absence, I've been sorting some things out and trying to figure out just what the heck I want to do with my life.

Spoiler Alert: A light bulb will not appear and turn on above your head in a scene where some Michelle Branch song is playing and your whole life plan just conveniently nestles itself into your brain while you tilt your head back, smile into the clouds and spin in happy circles while wearing a sundress the day after graduation. Life is not a movie. Sorry if I ruined it for you, folks.

And although things in this neck of the woods have been particularly inactive, I've been pretty busy just dealing with life, for lack of a better phrase. Not in the sense that I've had major life changes—in fact, my life has been pretty stagnant and uneventful so far in 2015, but internally, I've been dealing with a lot.

So what exactly have I been sorting through in the past three months?

The biggest thing that I find myself struggling with right now is the idea of what I should be doing with my life verses what I want to be doing with my life. As a child, the day you learn the English language (or so it seems anyways), you're told you're supposed to follow the pattern: go to school, graduate, pay a lot and go to more school, graduate, get a job, work, work, work, work, work and eventually enjoy a sliver of weekend. Repeat and repeat and repeat for 40 years.

If that doesn't sound appealing to you at all, don't worry, it doesn't sound so great to me either, and I can safely say that I already know I was meant for something different. I was not given my creativity and my itch to design, create and write for nothing.

While my current situation may not be what I see when I envision my dream job, I know that I can use it to my advantage in a few ways—the most obvious being that I am learning. Maybe it's not my number one passion, but my job constantly challenges me, I'm learning new skills and lessons and I can see improvement in my work. In the end, I know I will take with me the skills that I'm honing, regardless of where I end up. Another advantage? I can use my current situation to fuel my hard work in other areas of my life and to motivate me to work hard at getting my side projects off the ground and developing them.

Changes will most certainly not happen over night, but I'm excited to push myself in even more ways than I ever have before, especially when it comes to how I keep myself motivated. I've always been a person who is motivated by other people. In high school I wanted to make my parents proud and show my teachers that I knew my stuff. When I played soccer, I had teammates depending on me. With internships that I held, I had deadlines and wanted to prove to my bosses that they had made the right choice in hiring me. All the pressure that I put on myself (aside from being a perfectionist) was in some way driven by the need to impress someone else. But for the first time, in order to achieve the goals and dreams that I wholeheartedly want, everything is up to me, and it will be a big test to see if that in itself is enough.

And with that, stay tuned, because exciting things are coming and I can't wait to share them with everyone who stuck through my three-month break with the Internet.

With Love (no matter how long it's been since I last wrote),

Sunday Snippets 02

I’ve been in the entrepreneurial spirit lately so I've recently been reading several articles on start-ups and inspiring business people. Speaking of which, have you ever spent even like five minutes on Entrepreneur.com? Probably not, because it’s impossible to only spend five minutes there. It’s a black hole of inspirational articles that just keep sucking you in further and further. I spent my lunch break the other day on the site, and it must have been the fastest hour that I’ve ever experienced. I particularly enjoyed 15 Ways to Overcome Procrastination and 20 Reasons to Start Your Own Business

I was reading a past issue of Fast Company and there was a huge piece on Tory Burch and the empire that she has built in the past 10 years. While the article didn't focus a ton on her work space, it did mention that it was very similar to the decor of her stores, which inspired me to do a little of my own digging. I found that Architectural Digest did a feature on her office in September, and let me just say: ultimate office goals.

Hilarious! I can easily name several times when I have seen each of these photos posted to Instagram, and these spoofs are so spot on, especially the excessive hashtags.
