Jello Legs

I volunteered at the Chicago Marathon this weekend, and although I watch it every year on TV, there's something about being there in person that makes you want to jump the fence and run alongside all the participants (although some people, I'm sure, would argue that they would want to run far in the opposite direction).

I was helping out at the very end of the course after the finish line, directing runners to various hospitality tents. I loved it because I got to see every runner who raced and it was amazing to see how many people accept the challenge of running 26.2 miles. There were people who looked like they had just warmed up and then there were people who were clearly in pain. But the people who got to me the most were those who looked like their legs were going to give out at any minute, but couldn't have been any happier because they just accomplished something that they thought they would never do. I want to be one of them someday.

There was one older man in particular who came in at the end of my shift. He was running with his daughter and she was holding a sign that said "My dad is 85. What's stopping you?"Well if that doesn't get you thinking, I don't know what will. It made me want to start training instantly.

Running a marathon is something that I thought only crazy people did. Sure I love running, but anything over 5 miles has always been considered torturous in my mind. Now I have a completely different perspective on it and I want to be one of those people crossing the finish line with an enormous (tired) smile and jello legs someday. It's definitely going on the bucket list!

Have you ever ran a marathon, or considered running one?
